We wrote this post nearly two years ago, and I hate to say that we still haven't really figured it out. We still believe in the basic principles we've outlined here, but the concrete application of them is something that seems to be in constant flux. One challenge for us is that our kids DO use screens for those better purposes you outline--as well as for the things we don't value as much. And, all three kids use them differently. One size fits all isn't working, but they strongly fight anything they perceive as unfair, and they often equate "equal" with "fair." It's definitely a huge challenge for us.

We're still trying to figure out where the balance is. The problem is that when my kids do get on the computer for free time, unless we set a limit, they can be on their for hours - literally, playing games, watching videos or online window-shopping. Anything but getting new information, learning things, or communicating with others in appropriate ways (ie, sending emails to friends or relatives).

I'm still trying to work that one out as spending too much online can be a problem for anyone - not just kids. We're trying out different tools that have parental controls or are site blockers, but it gets to be a chore trying to keep on top of it all. My husband likes to rebuild computers so we have 3 in the basement that the kids can access even though I would rather they only use the main one in the main living space. Argh. So frustrating. Don't know where to start or how to limit their time!

Sorry Alana,
We did remove the captcha. Trying to balance ease of use with spam protection. We'll go for a while without it unless the spam gets overwhelming. Thanks for letting us know.

I have trouble with your captha. Repeatedly. This is the third time I've tried to leave a comment on this post--can you remove the captha? I often try to leave comments for you--only to have your system erase them hen I get the captcha incorrect. As ell, would you provide an email address so one can reach you there? This is beyond frustrating. --Fortunately, I copied this before trying to send it. Fourth time lucky? Fifth?

Oh yeah--we have trouble with setting a good example, too. I think, though, that's what helped us get more real about the whole issue of screen time: We realized how much we use screens for things we think are good (mostly). That helped us see that our kids do the same thing. Still, you can have too much of a good thing. It's definitely a balancing act and work in progress for us.

Thanks for writing--we love to know what others are thinking/trying.
